Overview of ETIAS and EES Entry-Exit System

As of 10 April 2026, the European Entry-Exit System (EES) is fully operational at all external border crossing points of the countries using EES. ETIAS and EES are two digital systems used by the European Union to manage how you enter and leave European countries for a short stay. One checks you before travel, while the other records your movement at the border.

ETIAS and its Purpose

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a pre-travel authorization required for visa-exempt, non-EU visitors. You apply online before your trip, and the approval is linked directly to your travel document.

ETIAS allows you to visit multiple European countries for short visits over a set period. It does not replace a visa and does not guarantee entry at the border.

When you apply, you provide basic personal and travel details. This helps authorities assess potential risks before you depart.

What the EES Does

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an automated border system that records each time you enter or leave participating European countries. It replaces passport stamping with a digital record tied to your identity.

At the border, your data is collected and matched with your travel document. This includes entry and exit dates, as well as any refused entry.

EES applies to all non-EU travelers visiting for a short stay, whether they need ETIAS or not. It ensures your time in the region is tracked accurately.
